— In one sentence —
The second Department Q investigation, for readers who want to continue beyond Netflix's Carl Morck premise.
§ 01 · WHY READ
Why read
The Absent One is the second Department Q novel. Carl Morck and his basement unit reopen the murder of two siblings at a summer cottage, a case that points back to a group of former boarding-school friends. Dutton published the English edition as ISBN 9780525952893.
Netflix's Dept. Q draws on Adler-Olsen's series, but this is continuation reading rather than a claim about a specific Netflix episode. Read it after The Keeper of Lost Causes if you want the same difficult partnership and a case more concerned with money, status, and the harm people can hide behind both.
§ 02 · CHARACTERS
Characters
Carl Morck remains skilled and abrasive, now less able to pretend the unit is temporary.
Assad presses the investigation forward when Carl would rather take the easier answer.
Rose brings a different kind of attention to the team as the case opens out.
§ 03 · HIGHLIGHTS
Three highlights
No. 1 - A real sequel. It builds on the unit instead of resetting it.
No. 2 - Social pressure around the crime. The suspects' position matters as much as the old evidence.
No. 3 - A useful next stop. It keeps the series' cold-case structure while changing the emotional terrain.
§ 04 · EDITIONS
Recommended editions
| Edition | Why pick it |
|---|---|
| Dutton hardcover | English edition, ISBN 9780525952893. |
| Paperback | A practical way to continue the sequence. |
| Audiobook | Suits a procedural with several suspects to track. |
§ 05 · FIT
Who it's for / not for
Read this if you are...
- Continuing after The Keeper of Lost Causes.
- Looking for Nordic crime that takes class cruelty seriously.
- Comfortable with a dark historical crime.
Skip it if you are...
- New to Department Q; start with book one.
- Avoiding violence toward young people.
- Looking for a cozy mystery.
§ 06 · TIPS
Reading tips
- Read the first book first; the working relationships land better in order.
- Avoid film or television plot summaries if you want the investigation intact.
- Keep an eye on what the old case record leaves out.
§ 07 · COMPARE
Read alongside
- Jussi Adler-Olsen - The Keeper of Lost Causes. The essential first case.
- Jussi Adler-Olsen - A Conspiracy of Faith. The next Department Q novel.
- Tana French - In the Woods. Another crime novel where an old case resists a neat answer.
§ 08 · DISCUSSION
Discussion questions
- What does wealth allow the suspects to ignore?
- How does the unit change from the first book?
- What makes an old case feel urgent in the present?
One line to remember
“Department Q reopens a brutal old double murder and finds that privilege has protected the people closest to it.”— bibliotecas editorial summary, not a textual quotation
